Ornamental plants are emerging as a natural and eco-friendly solution for treating coffee wastewater, which is often rich in organic matter, caffeine, and other pollutants. During coffee processing, large volumes of wastewater are produced, and if released untreated, they can harm soil, water bodies, and aquatic life. Using ornamental plants for wastewater treatment not only helps reduce pollution but also adds aesthetic value to treatment areas, making this approach both practical and visually appealing.
These plants clean coffee wastewater through a process known as phytoremediation. Their roots absorb nutrients, organic compounds, and certain toxic substances from the wastewater. At the same time, beneficial microorganisms living around the roots help break down complex pollutants into simpler, less harmful forms. This combined plant–microbe activity significantly reduces biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and suspended solids in coffee effluents.
Ornamental species such as canna lily, water hyacinth, vetiver, and peace lily are especially effective because of their fast growth and dense root systems. These roots provide a large surface area for pollutant absorption and microbial action. As the plants grow, they utilize excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, preventing these compounds from causing eutrophication in nearby water bodies.
Another advantage of using ornamental plants is sustainability. This natural treatment method requires low energy input, minimal chemicals, and simple maintenance compared to conventional wastewater treatment systems. It is particularly suitable for small-scale coffee farms and rural processing units where advanced treatment facilities may be expensive or unavailable.
In addition to cleaning wastewater, ornamental plant-based systems contribute to greener landscapes and improved environmental awareness. They demonstrate how nature-based solutions can address industrial pollution while supporting biodiversity. By integrating ornamental plants into coffee wastewater management, producers can move toward more sustainable and environmentally responsible coffee production.
