Cyclone Montha: Chennai Braces for Heavy Rains! Orange Alert Out!

Cyclone Montha is steadily approaching the Tamil Nadu coast, and Chennai is now on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for the city and nearby districts. The cyclone, currently moving over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring intense rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions over the next few days. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid venturing near beaches or low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Meteorologists have predicted that Cyclone Montha will likely make landfall close to the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts. Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram districts are expected to experience widespread rainfall, with some areas likely to receive more than 200 mm in 24 hours. Coastal winds may reach speeds of 60–80 km/h, causing potential damage to trees, hoardings, and power lines. The IMD has also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea until further notice.

The Greater Chennai Corporation and state disaster management teams are already making preparations to tackle any emergencies. Pumps have been deployed in flood-prone zones, and temporary shelters are being arranged for residents living in vulnerable areas. Power and telecommunication departments have been instructed to stay alert for disruptions and to restore services swiftly if outages occur. Emergency response teams are also on standby to handle evacuation and relief operations if the situation worsens.

Chennai’s residents are being advised to keep essential supplies ready, such as drinking water, batteries, and first-aid kits. Those living near water bodies have been asked to move to safer locations as a precaution. Public transportation schedules may also be affected due to waterlogging and strong winds, and schools are likely to remain closed depending on rainfall intensity. Social media channels and official weather portals are providing regular updates to ensure the public stays informed.

While the city has experienced several cyclonic events in recent years, authorities emphasize that preparedness is key to minimizing impact. With coordinated efforts from the administration and cooperation from the public, Chennai aims to weather Cyclone Montha safely. As the cyclone continues to approach, the next 48 hours will be crucial in determining its strength and path — and how much rainfall the region will ultimately receive.
